Mumbai Indians finalize four key player retentions ahead of IPL 2025. Find out who they are, auction plans, and strategic moves for the upcoming season.
With the submission date of IPL 2025 retention lists rapidly approaching, defending champions Mumbai Indians (MI) are now set for crucial decision-making. Three years since the 2019-dominance led by Rohit Sharma, Mumbai Indians were highly unimpressive in the recent IPL 2024. The franchise is keen on regrouping their stable of players with some serious names. Reports by The Indian Express hint that four significant names have already been shortlisted by MI to be retained for the much-awaited IPL 2025 mega auction.
Key Retentions by Mumbai Indians for IPL 2025
The management of Mumbai Indians have apparently decided to retain its trusted leaders in order not to lose a seamless blend of experience and firepower. Here are four key players MI is set to retain:
Current skipper and all-rounder in key role, Hardik Pandya adds versatility with bat and ball, and after a disappointing performance last season, MI believes in him to lead the team into brighter 2025.
This is one of the most successful IPL Captains - Rohit Sharma, who has been the backbone of Mumbai Indians for so many years. With rumors linking the latter to Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) - the MI still feels that retaining Rohit is going to lead to an even stronger team for the upcoming season.
Suryakumar Yadav - India's T20I skipper and dynamo of the middle order, his explosive batting makes him a valuable asset. Rumors floated in that Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are trying to bring him back home, but MI aren't letting go of their star performer.
A slinger par excellence, Jasprit Bumrah, has been the spearhead of Mumbai Indians' bowling. His consistency and menacing yorkers make him a position crucial to the franchise, and his presence alone gives Mumbai an edge over its rivals in crucial situations.

Strategic Moves in the IPL 2025 Mega Auction
Besides these four players, MI has huge plans for the IPL 2025 auction. They are apparently seeking to reclaim their emerging star Ishan Kishan. Kishan has been an important player over the years and Mumbai would certainly eye him once again to provide more solidity in their batting line-up. Finally, the Mumbai Indians would look to utilize their Right To Match card on Australian big-hitting batting power-house Tim David, who has caught everyone's eye with his finishing ability and crucial cameos in death overs in a match played.
Some young talents that franchise will like to bring back on the side include Tilak Varma and Nehal Wadhera, two of the uncapped players who have featured very impressively in the last few seasons.
IPL 2025 Retention Rules And Player Costs
Under the IPL 2025 retention rules, any of the six franchises are allowed to retain at most six players-six players at max five capped and two uncapped. The retained player costs are split as shown:
First retainer: ₹18 crore
Second retainer: ₹14 cr
Third retainer: ₹11 cr
Fourth retainer: ₹9 cr
Fifth retainer: ₹7 cr
Sixth retainer: ₹4 cr can retain as many uncapped players
This way, the teams would be able to strengthen their foundation without losing their prospects for the auction itself.
Mumbai Indians Strategy of Rebuild
The franchise will be looking for a new starting point after a discreditable IPL 2024 campaign as MI finished at the last of the table. The franchise looks all set to start on a fresh note under Hardik Pandya's captaincy though he had a terrible start but with the unwanted reports of a rift within the camp, making the situation even more dramatic. At their own home ground, the fans booed Pandya over taking the reins from Rohit Sharma, giving an idea of the prevailing tension between the changes in the leadership.
Mumbai Indians are up for a comeback in 2025, though. Mahela Jayawardene has reassigned as head coach and former India bowling coach Paras Mhambrey joining the franchise look set to address weaknesses, most visibly on the bowling front, enhance fielding, and provide continuity within the top-middle order.
Expectations for IPL 2025
Mumbai Indians look forward to getting back into the groove of being a winning side with the beginning of this new season. Retention on a firm note and some bold auctions in the fray put the team in a fresh context. Can the franchise reclaim some glory to attain title heights and flourish under Hardik Pandya and their sets of superstars? Only time will now tell.
Will this strategic retention pay off, or will Mumbai Indians need more reinforcements to dominate the IPL 2025 season? Stay glued for more in the next updates as the date for auction draws near.
