Manchester United's Alejandro Garnacho withdraws from Argentina squad due to injury. Will the young star recover before United's next crucial Premier League clash?
Alejandro Garnacho, the talented player for Manchester United, has withdrawn from the Argentine squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup Anthony qualifiers that will take place in October because of a knee injury.
The 20-year-old winger, who completed the entire match in United’s recent goalless draw against Aston Villa, will however go back to Manchester, for further scans and assessment.
This news is bad for the Argentine national team as they will play two important qualifying matches against Venezuela and Bolivia. Garnacho, who was anticipated to be a crucial asset in these matches, will now work on his rehabilitation, in a hope of being included in the squad for the upcoming international matches.
Garnacho’s Injury Setback Amid Impressive Start
Garnacho’s injury comes at a critical time, especially after his impressive performances early in the season. Speaking about his withdrawal, Garnacho shared his thoughts:
“I had knee problems in the last two matches, and I won’t be able to be with the national team. I hope to recover soon so I can be on the next date.”
The Madrid-born star has already made seven appearances for Argentina and was part of the squad that lifted the Copa America 2024 trophy in a 1-0 win against Colombia. While this injury is undoubtedly a setback, Garnacho remains optimistic about his recovery and future contributions to both Manchester United and Argentina.
Ten Hag’s Praise for Garnacho Despite United’s Struggles
Despite Garnacho’s unfortunate injury, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has heaped praise on the young winger for his excellent start to the season. After United’s 0-0 draw against Aston Villa, Ten Hag highlighted Garnacho’s potential and the role he has played so far:
“I think Garnacho is already a threat all season, scoring and assisting. He’s got great potential, and we’ve seen that in his performances.”
The Argentine forward has been a bright spot in what has otherwise been a challenging start to the season for Manchester United. So far, Garnacho has contributed three goals and three assists for the club, proving himself to be a critical attacking option in Ten Hag’s setup.
However, the club’s performance in front of the goal has been a cause for concern. Ten Hag addressed this in a recent interview, emphasizing that the goals will come:
"Rasmus Hojlund is just getting started, and he’s not at 100% fitness yet. He’s our best goalscorer. But others can score too—players like Rashford, Bruno Fernandes, and of course, Garnacho."
While Garnacho makes his way back to Manchester to complete scans and recuperate, United will be warm under the wraps in relation to his situation. Given that Rasmus Hojlund is still on the rehabilitation process alongside Marcus Rashford who is only showing glimpses of his, the Red Devils will require plenty of firepower in order to ascend up the Premier League table.
The coming few weeks are going to be important for Garnacho, the player we are talking about and also for United as a team. Supporters will be wishing it is not a serious injury for the Argentina National Team player as they would wish to see him back on the pitch very soon as the next Premier League match for United is very close.
